OCTOBER 6, 2013 :: CAPTAIN BARBADOS was our standout star at the 2013 QLD State Championship Show at Lowood this month. He took out the awards for Champion Led ASH Stallion, Champion Hack ASH Stallion and Champion Working ASH Stallion. He topped it all off by dominating an impressive line up of Working Champions to win the coveted Supreme Working ASH award of the show. This is the third time Maryanne Gough has won the Supreme Working ASH award at the QLD State Championships, with previous winners being CADABRA (AUS) - HSH in 2008, and TALAWAHL PLAYBACK in 2007. However, our lovely Dalby ASH Sale entrant, BOREE PARALLEL - HSH wasn't to be outdone, winning both her 2yo Hack ASH Filly & 2yo Working ASH Filly classes, taking Reserve Champion 2yo in each division. She also placed 2nd in the hotly contested Novice ASH Hack 3yrs & Under from 16 entries, and consistently took 2nd in the Novice ASH Working 3yrs & Under from 11 entries. A great weekend for the team, and a pleasure to be showing our personally owned horses to such success!

MAY 17, 2013 :: 2013 is the year that our resident sire CADABRA proved himself both a Campdraft winner, and now a sire of Campdraft winners. Kelwin Duncan rode his CADABRA daughter, GYPSY MAGIC, to a standout win in the Gatton Maiden Campdraft in May. Scoring a slick 89 to win the first round, the pair then backed it up in the final with a solid 86 to take out the event. Kelwin says, 'We won by 5pts! I just grab her from the paddock and take her to the drafts and I just work her on the day of the draft! I'm so glad I bred to Cadabra - everyone loves her and I'm proud to say she's by your stallion! I've done everything with her and she's the first young horse I've ever started. If her mother wasn't so old, I'd be taking her straight back to Cadabra!'. Congratulations Kelwin, and if you are doing well with your Cadabra progeny, let us know. We love to hear!

APRIL 26, 2013 :: Another great weekend for Icewood with Maryanne Gough and CAPTAIN BARBADOS placing 2nd in the 2013 Landmark Open Challenge at Toowoomba on the 26th April. The pair made the final 15 from nearly 50 competitors to place second to Cloncurry Challenge winner Hugh Miles on Woolerina Rhythm. Maryanne also finalled her client mount Ellendale Sarina, and her highest scoring first round reined work was on Cadabra, who struck a tough cow in the first round, nixing his final opportunity. APRIL 12, 2013 :: We currently have the lovely black filly, ICEWOOD FATE, available for sale. She has been professionally prepared, and is offered due to an overload of young horses to train at Icewood. We also have three other fillies the same age, all broken in, that are available through private enquiry. They carry bloodlines of SODA ORILEY, BLUE MOON MYSTIC, ACRES DESTINY, BETTER VIEW GUNFIRE, ADIOS REFLECT etc. Watch for ICEWOOD FATE in the May Horse Deals, and if you like her, by all means enquire before the magazine comes out. A video of Icewood Fate, and photos of the other fillies, are available to interested parties. Click here to contact us about our horses for sale.

MARCH 31, 2013 :: CADABRA's first Australian Stock Horse show since returning from North America, was the East Moreton Branch Championships held at Caboolture over Easter. CADABRA picked up right where he left off in 2008, dominating his ridden classes with consistent wins including Champion Senior Working ASH. At the end of the day, Cadabra was sashed Supreme Ridden Exhibit by two judges from all Senior and Junior Ridden event Champions, and won the award after having to complete both a Hack and Working pattern. He also ended the day the High Point Horse of the Show, and was of course presented over the weekend by Maryanne Gough. We would like to thank the sponsors Judy Rankin of Kinmont ASH Stud, and Stallionsplus.com for their genorous support of the event.

MARCH 23, 2013 :: CADABRA's first event in 2013 was the Beaudesert John Drynan and Winning Edge Memorial Campdraft held on the 23rd and 24th of March. CADABRA performed beautifully attracting many comments from some well known Campdrafters, scoring an 88 in the first round before cementing his win with an 89 in the final. Not to be outdone, his stablemate CAPTAIN BARBADOS ran off the cutout in the first round, before going on to score 89 in the final also, to place equal second overall. The Winning Edge Campdraft saddle was an amazing trophy to recieve, and made Cadabra's win all the more special. We are grateful to Winning Edge Saddlery, and all other sponsors for helping make the event a success. Maryanne Gough rode both horses to their placings, and was pleased to see her father Vic Gough, go on to place 5th in the Open Campdraft after leading going into the final. A great weekend for Icewood, and a fabulous start to the year!

SEPTEMBER 1, 2012 :: A big thank you to Horse Deals magazine who chose Maryanne Gough as the focus for their regular 'Scoop' feature in the September 2012 issue! Go to page 280 to read the fun Q & A, and get a great insight into the mind of this well-known horsewoman...

JUNE 23, 2012 :: At his first Campdraft after almost a year in the paddock, Cadabra has turned many heads at the Longreach Campdraft held 22-24 June, 2012. The stallion performed beautifully in the big 3 round Open Campdraft, scoring up to 87 to place 8th overall from around 150 of Central Queensland's best open horses and riders. Maryanne also placed equal second in the Ladies Campdraft riding Cool Star (a horse sold by Vic Gough some years prior) with an 88, running off the cut-out with a 23. Overall, a great weekend for us!

MARCH 13, 2012 :: Icewood would like to sincerely congratulate Cole Moxey and his very talented mare, ORLANGA REBA, on their recent win at the 2012 ASHS National Championship Show. Cole and Reba won the award for Supreme Working Australian Stock Horse at the Nationals, and won a service fee to CADABRA (AUS) in the process. Our representative for Icewood, Susie Caskey, was on hand to present the award, and we look forward to such a brilliant combination acquiring a CADABRA (AUS) foal. Cole is no stranger to the winner's circle, and you can read a great profile on him here. Photo credit Julie Wilson.

JANUARY 27, 2012 :: The ASHS National Championship Show is the most prestigious event on the Australian Stock Horse Society's calendar, offering not only the National Futurity, Maturity and Open Challenge, but also top level Campdrafting and Show events. In 2012, a service fee to CADABRA will be awarded to the Supreme Champion Working ASH of the event. Good luck to all participants at the Nationals, and for those who haven't entered yet, entries close on February 10th, 2012. JANUARY 26, 2012 :: Australia Day seems a great day for our first news for 2012! The 2012 Landmark Classic Campdraft Sale has three outstanding prospects on offer, all closely related to CADABRA. On Day 1, Friday 3rd February, the sale commences at 12:30 midday, and will see one of Cadabra's half sisters, SIMPLY GORGEOUS at Lot 76. On Day 2, Saturday 4th February, the sale commences at 8am, running through lots 146-379, and sees BERRAGOON SABRINA offered at Lot 278. On Day 3, Sunday 5th February, again commencing at 8am, the eye-catching PLAYMORE ILLUSION will be offered at Lot 434. We wish the best of luck to all buyers and vendors at the sale, and look forward to seeing the horses in the 2013 Landmark Classic Campdraft! Click here for draws and programmes.

DECEMBER 27, 2011 :: We are very proud to be a part of the Australian Stock Horse Society's new initiative to recognise heritage blood in the Australian Stock Horse breed. Our senior sire CADABRA is one of the first Australian Stock Horses to be awarded the Heritage Stock Horse (HSH) prefix to his name. As breeders we must recognise the value of maintaining the breed's distinctly Australian roots, not only as a historical link for future generations, but also to create international value. We believe that heritage bred horses will be those which are sought by overseas buyers. At the time of writing, CADABRA carries no less than seven Waler Horses of Significance in his pedigree: Bobbie Bruce 1934, Bruce 1900, Bulga Boy 1933, Haydons Starlight 1926, Radium 1918, Tester 1885 (pictured left) and Young Valais 1939. Click here to read more about the ASHS Heritage Stock Horse initiative.

DECEMBER 19, 2011 :: Icewood would like to congratulate Jackie Knudsen and family on their recent purchase of Vic Gough's outstanding dun Campdraft mare, BAYMAK FINESSE. Jackie wrote, 'We are so excited to own her, it isn't often that a mare of her class and experience comes up for sale'. Selling a mare that has been a fixture in our lives for the past 10 years was a difficult and sad decision, but we also know that she couldn't have gone to a better Campdraft competition home. We wish the Knudsen and Bright family every success with Finesse, and look forward to watching her compete at the top level in Australian Campdrafting.

OCTOBER 26, 2011 :: It's a... palomino! CAPTAIN BARBADOS has sired his fourth dilute foal with this gorgeous palomino colt born in last night's stormy weather. Anyone looking to keep some colour in their foals would do well to consider this stallion. Feel free to make an appointment to see our newest addition if you are considering Captain for your mare!

OCTOBER 16, 2011 | SHOW RESULTS :: Home from Brymaroo Campdraft and very happy with our stallions! CADABRA made the Novice Final, and then ran a 61 and 4 in his Maiden run. Turned lots of heads, and felt very switched on and capable. CAPTAIN BARBADOS placed 5th in the Restricted Open with Maryanne, and then won the first round of the Silver Buckle Open with a huge 94 (24, 66 & 4). A great weekend - nice to be Campdrafting again!

SEPTEMBER 27, 2011 :: Congratulations to Natalie Jackman for breeding and presenting CROCODILE DUNDEE; the second Canadian-bred CADABRA foal sold from Canada into the United States!

SEPTEMBER 11, 2011 | SHOW RESULTS :: Home from the wet and windy Beaudesert Stockman's Challenge and Show! On Saturday, Vic Gough rode CAPTAIN BARBADOS to win Champion Led ASH Stallion and Champion ASH Hack. This stallion continues to turn heads and we were told that Captain is '...even prettier in the flesh...' His calm, soft yet elevated movement continues to earn him purple sashes. Captain also won the first ridden section of the Beaudesert Stockman's Challenge with an impressive 93, with CADABRA following in 2nd with an 89.

AUGUST 30, 2011 | COVER :: The 2011 Performance Horse Yearbook sees our sire, CADABRA gracing the cover. The publication is in stores now and also includes an article on the return of Cadabra and Maryanne to Australia. As an interesting sidenote, Tracey McClurg, Managing Director of the Performance Horse Yearbook, believes that Cadabra is the first Heritage Australian Stock Horse ever to grace the cover. The beautiful design and photo are the handiwork of Natalie Jackman of Have Dog Productions.

AUGUST 27, 2011 | SAS BABY BONUS :: CAPTAIN BARBADOS and CADABRA are featured in the 2011 Stallions At Stud Annual Stallion Registry. Stallions At Stud is offering a $1000 Baby Bonus which makes any progeny by either of our sires eligible to win extra cash prizemoney at a number of nominated venues. JULY 30, 2011 | AWARD :: We are proud to announce that CADABRA, our jet-setting sire, has been awarded the Australian Stock Horse Society's 'Westpac Star of the Year' award for his outstanding achievements as an ambassador for his breed, the Australian Stock Horse. The award is decided by the ASHS Board of Directors, and was awarded at the ASHS 40th Anniversary Dinner in Scone on the 30th July, 2011. Joy Poole made a special effort to talk to Maryanne, telling her that the pool of horses nominated for the Star of the Year award this year were of the highest quality she had seen, and that CADABRA's win was definately something to be proud of. To read about how Cadabra achieved this prestigious award, click here.

JULY 1, 2011 :: Our 'Win a Service Fee' competition drew to a close today, and the lucky winner was Heidi Smith! Heidi is a campdrafter from New South Wales and commented on her win, "I am very excited and really appreciate the opportunity. We're looking forward to breeding a lovely foal with the great genetics, ability and type of it's father!". Heidi chose to breed to CADABRA and will join her mare in this 2011 season. Please keep watching our website and Facebook page to keep up with our news and future competitions!

JUNE 03, 2011 | SHOW RESULTS :: CAPTAIN BARBADOS attended the 2011 Lowood Agricultural Show on Saturday, 4th June. Ridden and shown by Maryanne Gough, the impressive brown stallion certainly made his presence felt, taking home not only Champion Led ASH Stallion, but also going on to be sashed Supreme Led Australian Stock Horse exhibit of the show. The pair saddled up to win the Working ASH Stallion class, and again ended the day with the green and gold sash for Champion Working ASH. Thank you to the West Moreton Branch ASHS for donating the sashes, and also to Nicole Currie for taking our photo!

APRIL 10, 2011 | SHOW RESULTS :: Back on Top. After only 13 days back in Australia, Maryanne has hit the ground running after winning the 2011 West Moreton ASH Open Challenge aboard the Icewood sire, CAPTAIN BARBADOS. From three sections, she won the Working (Judge Marilyn McCulloch), won the Campdraft section with an 89 (Judge Ian Glasby) and also ran a Hack pattern (Judge Mary Ann Atthow). An exciting return for Maryanne and a great start to the year for our sire, CAPTAIN BARBADOS.

MARCH 1, 2011 :: The current Australian Stock Horse Journal features the Australian Stock Horse in North America. Click on this link to find a PDF link to the article 'Cadabra Conquers Canada'! We love the focus and hope to see more about the breed on an international scale - grab a pen all our fellow international ASH breeders!

DECEMBER 5, 2010 :: CADABRA will be available in Australia for live cover, chilled or frozen semen in 2011. We will offer discounts for multiple mares and exceptional mares. Already siring Champion youngstock such as WILL I AM, JAYTEE PHANTOM and JUBANE NAKEETA, we are excited to offer Cadabra at stud to serious breeders on home soil. CADABRA recently had his coat colour tested and his results state that there was no red factor detected. CADABRA is homozygous for black pigment (EE) and cannot have red foals, regardless of the color of the mate.

NOVEMBER 15, 2010 :: MAKING HISTORY! CADABRA has trotted his way into the history books in his very successful two years abroad in Alberta, Canada. Under the hand of Maryanne Gough, CADABRA went on to amass the following statistics:
  • First ASH to compete in international cow horse competition
  • First ASH to win individual and annual championship awards in cow horse events
  • First ASH to be presented at major equine venues; the Calgary Stampede, Spruce Meadows and the Mane Event
  • First ASH stallion in Canada
Two years of CADABRA in North American competition, demonstrations and breeding have seen the credibility of the heritage Australian Stock Horses heightened. Competing among only cow-bred American Quarter Horses (the same bloodlines Australians continue to import), CADABRA turned heads with his outstanding turn of speed and reach, and his ability to turn faster than most horses whilst at speed. He was known for his impressive stopping ability in his reined work, plus imperceptable flying changes.

CADABRA and Maryanne are set to return home in 2011, and we hope that Australia is proud to welcome back such outstanding ambassadors for the Australian Stock Horse breed.

SEPTEMBER 5, 2010 | SHOW RESULTS :: CADABRA won his final ARCHA $2000 Limit Working Cow Horse event early in September. He and Maryanne ended the 2010 competition year as Reserve Champions in their division. A very consistent effort for the only Australian Stock Horse competing amongst cow-bred American Quarter Horses!

AUGUST 1, 2010 | SHOW RESULTS :: JUBANE NAKEETA, a stunning dun yearling filly by our resident sire, CADABRA (AUS), shone in both the open and Australian Stock Horse showrings at the annual Holbrook All Breeds Youngstock Show. After winning the classes for 'Dun - Yearling Any Sex', 'Australian Stock Horse - Yearling Any Sex' and '14.2hh & Under - Yearling Any Sex', she went on to take the sashes for Champion Dun, Supreme Champion Led Dilute Exhibit, Reserve Champion Australian Stock Horse, Reserve Champion 14.2hh & Under and Supreme Exhibit of Ring 2. Congratulations to her proud owner and breeder, Von Mitchell!

JULY 18, 2010 :: CADABRA and Maryanne participated in Breed Demonstrations on July 15th and 18th under the Big Top, showing off their ASH-skills and thrilling crowds this year at the Calgary Stampede.

JULY 10, 2010 :: In July of 2010, Maryanne and Cadabra competed in the Calgary Stampede's first-ever 'Extreme Cowboy Race'! Created by renowned clinician Craig Cameron, entry into the event was strictly by approval only and required video footage along with the other entry conditions. The event was run over three rounds, and the course changed each time. Horse and rider were presented with completely unknown elements which they had one opportunity to 'walk' 10 minutes before the event began. The horses didn't see anything until they entered to compete. Bright moving stagelights on the ground, double level and moving bridges, strange jumps, mirrors, floating bridges (yes in water!), curtains, dragging calf sleds - plus some very unusual props! The pair had a great time and again, Cadabra was the first of his breed to ever present in an event like this!

JULY 4, 2010 | SHOW RESULTS :: Maraynne Gough and CADABRA were winners of the $2000 Limit Working Cow Horse both days at Claresholm ARCHA this weekend! This shot is from his 73 fence run.

JUNE 12, 2010 :: The lovely first cross CADABRA filly, Shazam, bred by Jacquie McArthur of Canada, has been sold to a new home in Texas, USA. The filly was purchased by a Polocrosse home and we are excited to see the first CADABRA foal exported to the United States and hope to hear about her in the years to come.

MAY 31, 2010 | SHOW RESULTS :: CADABRA wins the ARCHA $2000 Limit Working Cow Horse on Saturday, May 30 at Claresholm.

MAY 26, 2010 :: CADABRA is now the sire of five healthy foals at McArthur Farms. Four fillies stacked the odds against the only colt, and breeders from the past season are reporting their new arrivals all the time. We look forward to watching these babies grow into young horses and hope that whatever discipline they end up in, that they carry on promoting this great Australian breed.

APRIL 23-25, 2010 | EVENT :: Don't forget to come say g'day at the Mane Event in Red Deer this weekend! Our demo times are: Friday April 23 - 5pm UFA Arena, Saturday April 24 - 7pm UFA Arena (plus see us in the Saturday Night 'Equine Experience'), Sunday April 25 - 3pm Morand Arena. We also have a trade booth all weekend. See you there!

APRIL 20, 2010 :: The first foal born in Canada by CADABRA (AUS) is the feminine black/grey filly, YAHOO IGLOO, bred by McArthur Farms from the exported Australian Stock Horse mare, CONDAMINE GLEN IDOL.

APRIL 18, 2010 | SHOW RESULTS :: The first ARCHA show of the season ran 17-18 April at Claresholm Agriplex, AB. Our favourite duo, CADABRA with Maryanne Gough in the saddle had a fantastic start to the season winning the $2000 Limited Working Cow Horse event on Sunday afternoon. The cattle were a bit tough but the pair showed grit and determination as they took home the winning cheque with a score of 144.5. Congratulations to them both and thank you to the Swales family who continue to support them in their new class!

FEBRUARY 6, 2010 :: Back in Australia, the Queensland Agricultural Show season has kicked off with one of the first being Allora Show, Queensland. We are proud to announce that WILL I AM, a 2008 bay colt by CADABRA, was awarded Supreme Led Australian Stock Horse exhibit (shown by owner/handler Nicole Currie). We congratulate them both on this outstanding result and expect to hear of more Cadabra progeny in the winners circle as they reach showing age and begin their careers.

FEBRUARY 4, 2010 :: Whilst holidaying in Australia this year, Maryanne had the opportunity to ride in the 2010 Landmark Classic Priefert Open Campdraft. Aboard her father's Acres Destiny stallion, CAPTAIN BARBADOS, she accumulated a two-round total of 174 to secure her place in the Thursday night final, and some round money in the second round. The pair ended up just out of the places with a three-round aggregate of 260, and three full courses.

The Priefert Open had over 230 competitors and approximately 25 were taken back into the final. (Campdrafting is an Australian cattle working sport incorporating a cut out section, with the added excitement of guiding the cow around a cloverleaf patterned course. Scores are out of 100 and are made up of cut out score, horsework score and course score.)

JANUARY 1, 2010 :: Breeding season is fast approaching! We're taking bookings for 2010 -- Book now to reserve your spot -- booking forms and breeding contracts are available to download now.

JANUARY 1, 2010 | PRESS :: Check out some recent North American press on CADABRA and the ASH: Western Horse Review (Dec/Jan 2010 issue, pg 69); Gaitpost (Jan 2010 issue, pg 22) 'Australian Stock Horses - The Breed for All Needs' by Christina Weese; Horse Illustrated (Jan 2010 issue, pg 26) 'The Horses of Oz' by Audrey Pavia.

NOVEMBER 16, 2009 :: Dates for the Spring Series of Maryanne Gough's popular Horsemanship Clinics have been set. The Ladies Horsemanship series is set to begin on March 16th, 2010, every Tuesday for eight weeks. Also in news, Maryanne is set to travel to the United States east coast to coach horsemanship for the Polocrosse community in December. She will work with USA World Cup Polocrosse players Ryan Murphy and Rahul Desai doing a number of clinics throughout Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Florida.

NOVEMBER 03, 2009 :: Vic Gough is a well known name in the Australian horse industry, but even his biggest fans would be surprised to know that in December 2009, Vic will be 79 years old.

The 2009 Warwick Gold Cup had a record number of entries this year which seems to be a growing trend. Over 790 entries in one event is nearly unheard of in any sport - horse or otherwise - and with three harrowing rounds to be completed, only the best of the best end up 'in the money'.

Vic was very pleased with his well recognised mount, the dun mare Baymak Finesse (Glenmore Partnership Buster/Baymak Refine). Interesting trivia: she was passed in for $35,000 at the 2008 Dalby ASH Sale and like all things in life - everything happens for a reason.

"It's very different from the days when there were 60 entries in the Warwick Gold Cup," Vic says, "these days you are competing against absolutely huge numbers and a large portion of the riders today are professionals in the sport. I'm very pleased with the mare, she is really hitting her prime now - she was one of only two horses to make both the Canning Downs final and the Warwick Gold Cup final. The other was a mare ridden by Terry Hall."

Vic is one of the men who has won the Warwick Saddlebronc Ride and has placed second in the Warwick Gold Cup twice. He is a very consistent competitor however with many placings in the 'Melbourne Cup of Campdrafting', and he shows no sign of slowing down yet! Congratulations Dad!

SEPTEMBER 9-13, 2009 | EVENT :: The Australian Stock Horse was displayed for the first time at this years Breeds For The World expo at the Spruce Meadows 'Masters' Tournament. Cadabra and Maryanne showed in Australian stock style - stockwhip and all, YALLATUP REGINA was ridden by Sam Darmody to showcase Polocrosse, and CONDAMINE GLEN IDOL was presented in full Dressage regalia. The different disciplines shown was a concious effort to show the breeds' versatility and talent. The Australian Stock Horse booth did a brisk business with Australian Equine Exporting Services' Amanda Riordan at the helm and we enjoyed meeting the many admirers of the breed. Cadabra proved his gentle nature and amiable personality as he stood quietly in his display stall amidst the stress and chaos of the trade show atmosphere.

SEPTEMBER 6, 2009 | SHOW RESULTS :: We are excited to announce that Maryanne and Cadabra are current Reserve Champions in their division of the Alberta Reined Cow Horse Association - pictured are the engraved silver trophy spurs the pair were awarded. After attending 11 of 15 possible Cow Horse shows on the circuit, Cadabra had 4 wins and consistent placings despite both he and Maryanne being newcomers to the sport. His athleticism, presence and cow served him well in a large field of cow bred Quarter Horses. We are grateful for the support and guidance of the Swales family and look forward to more successes next year.

AUGUST 2, 2009 | SHOW RESULTS :: CADABRA, the first Australian Stock Horse stallion in Canada, is turning heads as a competitive Reined Cow Horse. At the ARCHA (Alberta Reined Cow Horse Association) Claresholm Stock Horse show on the 1st & 2nd August, 2009, Cadabra came 3rd and 1st respectively, scoring a consistent 73 in his reined work both days. Ridden by his owner, Maryanne Gough, Cadabra is competing in a Limited Open division and has won two shows this season, and is placing consistently.

This talented 7yo stallion is proving that Australia has its own talented and trainable cow horses, and with no Quarter Horse blood at all, Cadabra will provide an exciting outcross to the Quarter Horse lines already available in North America. We predict that the 2010 breeding season will be a big one for Cadabra at the McArthur-Icewood Stud Farm near Calgary, Alberta and those in Canada should keep an eye out at upcoming ARCHA shows (see www.albertareinedcowhorse.ca for this eye-catching black stallion.

Maryanne is very grateful to Alberta horse trainers, John & Clint Swales for their tuition and guidance as she and Cadabra continue to adapt to this new style of riding.

JULY 6-8, 2009 | EVENT :: CADABRA and CONDOMINE GLEN IDOL presented with great success in the Calgary Stampede's Breed Showcase. The pair made history performing in the first ever Australian Stock Horse demonstration at the famous Calgary Stampede.

JUNE 10, 2009 | PRESS :: News of CADABRA's Canadian cow horse debut appears in HORSE JOURNAL. For more on the magazine, and to read the full article, click here.

MAY 31, 2009 | SHOW RESULTS :: CADABRA, our ASH stud, competed for the first time overseas this past weekend in Claresholm, Alberta -- making Australian Stock Horse history as it was the first time an ASH horse has ever competed in North America in a Cow Horse event.

The event was offered by the ARCHA as one of its regular spring events. It was undeniable as they entered the show arena that neither horse nor rider were new to the show ring. Both displayed their talents, charisma and abilities, quickly drawing the attention and support of the crowd. Placing second in a field of 12 tough competitors, completing both pattern and fence work. Expressing the breed's cow ability, athletic abilities and quiet temperament throughout the weekend. Attending participants and spectators supported Maryanne and CADABRA with an old-fashioned welcoming applause and supportive whistles during their competition. Support continued after the event with kind words of support and congratulations to their visiting new members. Thank you to all for their support and interest in the ASH breed.

The ASH team would like to offer a BIG thank you to John and Clint Swales who have been mentoring Maryanne and CADABRA in the weeks leading up to this inaugural event. See you again at the next ARCHA event.

MAY 8, 2009 | PRESS :: Cover-boy CADABRA! The May/June issue of the AUSTRALIAN STOCK HORSE JOURNAL has our boy on the cover and includes an article about McArthur-Icewood, the Australian Stock Horses and their import into Canada. For more on the magazine, click here.

APRIL 15, 2009 | PRESS :: THE WESTERN WHEEL Vol. 33 No. 37 "AUSTRALIAN BREED LANDS IN OKOTOKS" By Bruce Campbell, Sports Editor "'When I came back to Alberta to look for a horse, I was always missing a piece of the puzzle,' she said. 'Sometimes that piece was temperament, durability or heartiness... What I was looking for is a versatile horse. If one member of the family wants to go into penning and another wants to be a top competitor in working cow-horse, one horse can do both.' To bring the horses to Alberta McArthur had the assistance of Maryanne Gough, from Lowood, Australia. Gough said the Australian Stock Horse's versatility is shown when they compete in Australian challenges — a competition with events ranging from working cattle to riding patterns..."

MARCH 31, 2009 :: "Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stayed could prevent our courageous couriers from the completion of their delivery" Perhaps Maryanne didn't recognize the oath of Herodotus or the postal service before but I think she can relate to it now after travelling from her home in Lowood, Australia to Calgary, Canada with the ASH stock. What began as a scheduled eight day trip turned into 14 days of airline flight and road condition delays. Most notable were the ongoing 'Road Condition Snow Fall Warnings' being issued while travelling on the I-15 through the Rocky Mountain passes in Montana and Idaho causing the volume of delays experienced during their roadtrip to their new home in Canada. Yes, Spring in the Rockies can be very unpreditable.

All arrived safely in the dark of night March 31 at 11PM amidst sub-zero temperatures, high winds, and falling'n blowing snow -- A very "Canadian" welcome. (It's spring you say? What spring?) The horses took all of the events of their trip in stride and remaining healthy and sensible during their long haul from Australia to thier new home in Canada. Special thanks to Kim Elliott of Elliott Equine Transport for her care, patience and attention over the long haul. No doubt the horses feel as though they've landed on an alien planet -- so vast the sea of white, this unfamiliar stuff called snow.

DECEMBER 25, 2008 | SHOW RESULTS :: South QLD Management Council Annual High Point Awards. Each year the South Queensland Management Council (SQMC) of the ASHS runs a series of Futurities & Challenges which culminates with the awarding of annual High Point awards. In 2008 the nominated Futurity/Challenges were; Eastern Downs ASHS (Warwick, QLD), Chinchilla ASHS (Chinchilla, QLD), Gympie ASHS (Kilkivan, QLD) and West Moreton ASHS (Toogoolawah, QLD).

Icewood was off to a cracking start in 2008, winning both the Open Challenge with TALAWAHL PLAYBACK (pictured top with stablemate CADABRA) and the 4yo Maturity with JAYTEE ETERNITY at Warwick in May. JAYTEE ROWDY wasn't to be overlooked and took home a second in the Yearling Futurity. At Chinchilla in June, TALAWAHL PLAYBACK won the Open Challenge (the third time Maryanne has won this Challenge) and JAYTEE ETERNITY (pictured middle) placed =2nd in the 4yo Maturity. JAYTEE ROWDY placed third in the Yearling Futurity. Kilkivan was next and TALAWAHL PLAYBACK struck a white Brahman that had a different idea of what Campdrafting consists of than he did! His stablemate CADABRA (who did not compete in the whole run of SQMC Challenges due to Maryanne being busy with a full team of clients horses), handled his beast extremely well and brought home a sash having placed in the top six of the Open Challenge. JAYTEE ROWDY won the Yearling Futurity at Kilkivan. Toogoolawah was the final event in the series and the pressure was on for Icewood's top three horses who were all very high up on the leaderboards. TALAWAHL PLAYBACK lived up to his title of 'Mr. Consistency' winning yet another Open Challenge and clinching the title of 2008 SQMC HIGH POINT OPEN CHALLENGE ASHM. JAYTEE ETERNITY placed second in the 4yo Maturity behind the consistent mare LAZY D SHEZA RIVOLI OAK and Kayleen Sutton, which was plenty to win her the embroidered rug for 2008 SQMC HIGH POINT 4yo MATURITY ASH. The lovely JAYTEE ROWDY had tongue's wagging when he won the Toogoolawah Yearling Futurity, clear winner of the 2008 SQMC HIGH POINT YEARLING ASH (pictured bottom).

DECEMBER 09, 2008 :: The 2008 Dalby ASH Sale was held under the new indoor structure on the slowly morphing Dalby Showgrounds. The obligatory rain and consequent black mud made sure everyone remembered where they were, as a massive 400 lots went under the hammer. The previous record price of $70,000 was equalled with Acton's purchasing the 8yo Warrenbri Romeo daughter, Clarke Family Roxette. Maryanne Gough of Icewood presented 5 horses at the Dalby Sale for an average price of $12,400 each. Vintage Casey (pictured) was presented by Maryanne for her father, Vic Gough, to acheive a $24,000 price and become the highest priced gelding at the 2008 Dalby ASH Sale. Vintage Casey was purchased by Col Sylvester and will make a sparkling addition to his Campdrafting team (view QLD Country Life article). Maryanne also presented a Lindsay mare for $9,500, a Cattle Ray/Warrenbri Omega mare for $9,500, a maternal half sister to Cadabra by Cattle Duffer for $15,000 and a Kyabra Abbeys Cattleman/Bates All Steel mare for $4,000. Vic Gough's dun mare, Baymak Finesse was passed in at $35,000 on the first day of the sale. Preparation will begin soon on the Icewood Tamworth Campdraft Classic Sale Draft, which includes an Acres Destiny filly, a full sister to Cadabra and a performed young Dimray Eclipse gelding... Stay tuned!

NOVEMBER 29, 2008 :: 2008 ASHS National Championships. The ASHS National Championships are over for another year after being held at Scone in NSW. The star for the Icewood team ended up being BINNIA GUNSLINGER owned by Jaytee Stud of Tamworth, NSW. Maryanne rode Gunslinger consistently throughout the four sections of Hack, Working, Time Trial and Campdraft to place 3rd Overall in the National Open Challenge, only behind Michael Wilson from 59 entries. His Icewood stablemates, CADABRA, who placed =3rd with RIVER VIEW SNOWMAN and Paul Vary, and TALAWAHL PLAYBACK (pictured top), who placed =1st with WILLDRAFT IGNITE and Michael Wilson were also positioned very well overall until the predictably unpredictable Campdraft section. Interestingly, three out of the 6 top placed horses in the Working section of the National Open Challenge were trained by Maryanne Gough at Icewood.

Maryanne also rode JAYTEE ETERNITY (pictured bottom) in the National Maturity for a 4th placing in the Hack Section. A difficult cow in the Campdraft section meant that this talented mare (whose acheivements include Champion Leds, Open Challenges, ASH Cattle Working classes and the 2008 SQMC High Point 4yo Maturity ASH) was out of the running this time around.

NOVEMBER 28, 2008 | SHOW RESULTS :: CADABRA wins Campdraft section of WMASHS Open Challenge with 91 points! CADABRA is definately showing the signs of becoming an exceptional Campdrafter. With limited access to cattle, and limited starts, the natural 'cow' and style obviously inherited from his sire and dam - both Open Campdrafters, is still shining through. CADABRA handled a difficult and exceptionally fast beast to score a 22, 65 and 4. As a Campdrafter, he has an amazing length of stride and powerful turn of speed, all the while being responsive and easy to steady. Afterwards, judge Bruce Wilson actually commented on CADABRA's cutout, saying that he "...gave him a 22 and immediately regretted it, it was a 23."

NOVEMBER 27, 2008 | SHOW RESULTS :: CADABRA (AUS) wins Supreme Champion Working ASH. CADABRA (AUS) wins Supreme Champion Working ASH at the 2008 QLD State Championship ASH Show. From a field of accomplished Australian Stock Horse stallions, Cadabra first won the Working Stallion 4 & 5 years, then ran off with winner of the Working Stallion 6 years & over (which happened to be his stablemate, BINNIA GUNSLINGER - also trained and shown by Maryanne Gough) to win Champion Working ASH Stallion. From here, Cadabra was required to run off with Champion Working ASH Mare (NEVLYN DALE - owned by SA Caskey and shown by Maryanne Gough), Champion Working ASH Gelding (TALAWAHL PLAYBACK - owned by the Ravenscrofts/Yandina Feed Barn and shown by Maryanne Gough), Champion Junior Working ASH (DOONGARA AUSTIN POWERS) and Champion Youth Working ASH (WAYMERE JAY CEE). Held under lights, the competition was strong and working out with a smooth and precise freestyle pattern, it was Cadabra who bought home the rug and sash for Supreme Champion Working.

NOVEMBER 27, 2008 | SHOW RESULTS :: JAYTEE ETERNITY wins 2008 Beaudesert Open Work Horse Challenge. JAYTEE ETERNITY, owned by Jamie & Tanya Shaw of Tamworth's Jaytee Stud and ridden by Maryanne Gough, came out on top of a 30 horse field over three sections consisting of a Reining pattern, two handed cutting and a Campdraft section. Eternity competed consistently, winning the Campdraft section, to take out the event which was held in conjunction with the 2008 Beaudesert Show. Runner up to Maryanne and Jaytee Eternity was Matthew Dunn riding his stallion Beauview Alfie.

NOVEMBER 27, 2008 | SHOW RESULTS :: TALAWAHL PLAYBACK wins Novice Campdraft. TALAWAHL PLAYBACK wins Novice Campdraft at Northern NSW ASH Challenge & Campdraft.

NOVEMBER 27, 2008 | SHOW RESULTS :: NEVLYN DALE wins 2008 Tamworth ASH Open Challenge. Whilst in foal to CADABRA, NEVLYN DALE (owned by Susie Caskey, Quirindi, NSW) carried her trainer and rider, Maryanne Gough, to an outstanding win at Tamworth in November. Her second last show before retiring to stud, NEVLYN DALE turned heads among a group of interstate competitors who rarely see the Queensland Icewood team in action. The Northern NSW ASHS Open Challenge consisted of three sections: a Working class, a Hack pattern and a Time Trial. NEVLYN DALE won the Working class from the strong field of horses and riders which included the likes of RIVERVIEW SNOWMAN, WATCHIRS STAR and TODDS MILLIE. Maryanne Gough dominated the Working section of the Open Challenge also taking second with TALAWAHL PLAYBACK, third with BINNIA GUNSLINGER and fourth with JAYTEE ETERNITY - a display of consistency in performance and judging. NEVLYN DALE followed her win with a 3rd in the Hack section, behind RIVERVIEW SNOWMAN and TODDS MILLIE. An exceptionally fast Time Trial run saw NEVLYN DALE (pictured with one of the judges; Geoff Darling) become the Overall Winner of the Open Challenge and made her connections very happy! TALAWAHL PLAYBACK wasn't to be forgotten however and placed third behind second placegetter, RIVERVIEW SNOWMAN and Paul Vary. At this same show, TALAWAHL PLAYBACK (or Wendell as most know him) also won Champion Working ASH under Maxine Brooks and won the Novice Campdraft under another judge. NEVLYN DALE is now enjoying the beautiful grass and a life of leisure at Susie's Quirindi property as we all excitedly await the birth of her first foal.
